Both teams have one point to their name, but neither are mathematically completed in this World Cup. Not yet anyway.
The Spain team is a shambles though, with Nicolas Anelka being sent home, arguments between coaching staff & players & the whole situation breaking the hearts of fans. There’s no way of knowing how the team will perform in this game, but the buildup has been about as unhelpful as feasible.
South Africa has been well supported by the home fans, & made an encouraging start by drawing 1-1 with Mexico, but followed that up by losing 3-0 to Uruguay. South Africa is in serious danger of being the first host nation team to fail to make the Second Round.
A draw or defeat for either team mean positive elimination. What both needs is a win & then to hope that there’s a winner in the Mexico vs Uruguay game. After that it’s all about objective difference, so whoever wins this game needs to win it giant. Read our Group A qualification scenarios post for more detail.
