World Cup Football: Mexico vs. Uruguay

Mexico and Uruguay can both guarantee progress to the knockouts with a draw. But neither will be keen to face likely Group B winners Argentina in the Round of 16, so the two may compete to top the group rather than finishing second.

Uruguay is currently top on goal difference, and will probably be keen to keep it that way. The celeste proved against France that they’re very much capable of playing for a goalless draw if needed, so it will all depend on whether Mexico wants to push for the win and first place, or accept the draw and second place, and the likely game against Argentina.

The risk for both teams is that a loss mathematically exposes them to the threat of France or South Africa taking second place, should either of those team rack up a massive win when they meat. Group A qualification scenarios explained in more detail here, but basically a draw is the least risky option for both teams.
